Everywhere in Bali we can see stores selling items made from wood. They can range from little souvenirs and knickknacks, to elaborate works of art and timber furniture fit for a king.

The most well-known area has to be Mas village, which is located a short distance from Ubud. There are scores of galleries and shops that cater to different clientele.
The price may range quite dramatically as you browse from shop to shop. Some shops (or galleries) may have their craftsmen work in front of the store, in plain view, in a bid to attract more walk-in tourists.

It is up to one's personal preference, on which type of shop he selects to make purchases. Personally, I prefer heading to the huge workshops or factories minus the fancy dressings. The locals there are just as friendly and willing to bargain.
Of course, having a local together with you will help to pave your way.

Most items sold in the village of Mas are made of good quality timber, unlike those commonly found in souvenir stores. The most common materials are Mahogany, Sandalwood, Hibiscus and Ebony.

If you are searching for something light and fun, try your luck in the numerous shops found between Tegallalang and Ubud. Those shops offer a far cheaper range of goods (but of poorer quality as well).
Happy shopping!
