石門洞 Shimendong, Taiwan

This is part of the fun Taiwan travel series. View the full itinerary here.

On the way from Yangmingshan to Yeliu, we passed by the scenic Northern Coast. There is a small attraction called Shimendong 石門洞 located there.

There was a large crowd today probably due to Qing Ming holidays, so we didn't feel the urge to linger.

This is a natural rock formation that looks like an arch. The hole was formed by long time erosion of water and wind. When the Japanese discovered this unique wonder, they named it as Shimen zhuang (stone gate).

The beach used to be submerged in water so you don't see fine sand; instead it is entirely made up of broken shells and coral pieces.

There's also a small bridge built on the coral rocks. This is a nice place for picnics. I saw a lot of families with young children picking shells at the beach.

There are splendid views like the Shimen wedding plaza and the Shimen Wind power station that I noticed along the way, on the drive down the coastal road. I am definitely going back the next time!

How to go to Shimendong:
From Taipei: Take Zhinan Bus 892 (指南客運台北) and get down at Shimen station (石門).
From Keelung: Take Danshui bus, get down at Shimen station.
or take Taiqi Bus (passes Jinshan) towards Danshui, get down at Shimen.
