Kuta and Legian, Bali

Strolling in Kuta and Legian can be quite a breeze. The cool sea breeze takes away the scorching heat of the sun, and the pavements are decent enough for pedestrians with a lot of trees providing shade.

There is only one setback - the narrow road is filled with cars and motorcycles. The air quality is, to put it frankly, very bad.

Due to the lack of time we stuck mainly to the main roads - Jln Karthika Plaza, along Kuta beach, and Jalan Legian. There's a charming blend of branded outlets, shopping malls, handicraft, pubs and novelty shops along the entire stretch - it is truly a feast for the eyes.

The streets of Kuta are littered with quaint buildings and structures of worship. It seems like there is a delightful surprise waiting for us to discover every time we make it past a corner!

Mid-stroll, we popped into the Matahari shopping complex to buy some layer cakes, more commonly known there as Kuih Lapis. You need to walk inside the departmental store and head for the biscuits section (not the bakery). There are several brands stacked on the shelves - but in my opinion the Monica brand is still the best. It's a far second compared to our very own layer cake from Sunflower Penang though - nothing to shout about.

Some people like to buy T-shirts while in Bali. There's a store called Joger in Jln Raya Kuta that sells T-shirts with humorous(read: MOSTLY lewd) messages written in Bahasa Indonesia. It can be quite funny, providing you understand it of course!
I was told that this store is quite small compared to another Teman Joger store in the village of Luwus, where Indonesian tourists will come by busloads.

Finally we reached Kuta beach just in time to catch the sunrise. Looks like half the Bali population has gathered on the beach. It's kinda overwhelming to see the beach teeming with people. I could not even find an empty spot to take pictures!

Hard Rock hotel and Hard Rock cafe is located strategically across Kuta beach.

The hotel is HUGE! Due to some private event taking place, we didn't have a chance to enter the swimming pool and garden area.

Been there, done that. We continued to Jalan Legian, stopping to gawk at the pubs and half naked Mat Sallehs everywhere. Legian is an awesome spot for nightlife. If you love club hopping, look no further!

For ladies, you may watch out for Body and Soul, a local designer brand selling apparel similar to Topshop. Or Uluwatu lace. Or sundresses you can buy from dozens and dozens of roadside stalls. There are also scores of shops selling little knickknacks and souvenirs.

It is an exhilarating experience to get lost in the streets of Kuta and Legian. Something new is always waiting to be discovered!
