Bopiliao Old Street 剝皮寮歷史街區, Taiwan

This is part of the fun Taiwan travel series. View the full itinerary here.

Bopiliao Old Street is a place rich in heritage and culture. It was made famous after the movie Monga was filmed here. It has been in existence since the Qing period, and has stood the test of time throughout the Japanese occupation and the development of Mengjia.

Nowadays it is well known as the one of the cultural highlights of traditional Taiwan, and here you could find Chinese herb shops, antique shops, prayer paraphernalia and established eateries.
It is also close to the famous Longshan temple.

We had originally planned to have breakfast at Zhou-ji, a shop famous for pork congee, but it was closed due to Qing Ming holiday :(

Along the same row of shophouses opposite Bopiliao, we stumbled upon a shop that looks promising... so we settled down for brunch.

Clockwise from top left: Goose intestines, pig ears, sliced noodles, prawn fritters.
The shop was called A Xiu Sliced Noodles Shop. It's just a couple of doors away from Zhou-Ji.

Some more traditional food that we didn't order.

After that we crossed the road to explore Bopiliao.

It's a charming place that has been lovingly restored and a popular spot for shooting movies.

See the combination of red bricks and glass that somehow seems perfectly matched.

A sign reminiscent of the 60's.

I wish I had a fisheye lens! After exploring the area we were ready to move on to our next destination - a secret restaurant selfishly guarded by locals :P

Getting to Bopiliao Old Street:
Take the THSR to Taipei Station, continue by MRT to Longshan Temple Station.
Take the train to Wanhua Railway Station.

Previous: Ximending - Ya Rou Bian | Next: National Palace Museum
