Fuji Harbor Tourism Fish Market 富基漁港觀光魚市, Taiwan

This is part of the fun Taiwan travel series. View the full itinerary here.

Fuji Harbor is famous for the tourist fish market where tourists could purchase fresh, live seafood and have it brought to a restaurant for cooking.

The fish market.

All seafood produce is brought in daily and more importantly, alive and swimmin'.

There's a huge variety of fresh seafood on offer.

Live squid!

The fish market is divided into 2 sections: The market is dedicated to the fishermen plying their trade, and there is a separate area housing restaurants that will help prepare the seafood.

For NT $3000, we had the following:
Sea urchins, Jiu-kong (nine holes-a type of shellfish that tastes similar to abalone), steamed Garoupa (medium size), stir fried cabbage (I LOVE Taiwanese cabbage!). 4 king prawns, rice

It's fun and the seafood is quite delicious because of the freshness. Coming from a place where seafood is plenty and cheap, I prefer not to make comparisons :)

OK.. now I will share some tips which I think are good to know:
Tip 1: Watch the scales! Some traders have been known to violate rules and there's a sticker with 'Forbidden to use' on the scale.
Tip 2: Can't take my eyes off you.. (the weighing process)
Tip 3: Ask the price before selecting.
Tip 4: Don't pay in haste. Double check everything.
Tip 5: My personal experience: Traders normally recommend items that they make most profit from - like king prawns. Make up your own mind. I observed locals opting for the smaller prawns which actually taste much better.
Tip 6: Make sure the price quoted by the seafood trader includes cooking fee. Otherwise, each restaurant (one level up) will charge a fee of around NT $500 or more to help cook the seafood.

There have been some negative feedback regarding this place as some feel that it is a tourist trap.
Well, I don't dispute the fact that the place is heavily commercialized and some traders *might* be less than honest. All I could say is you are paying for the experience :)

How to go to the Fuji Harbor tourism fish market:
Getting there from Danshui MRT (most convenient).
Board a Keelung or Danshui bus heading to Jinshan or Keelung via the coastal road (Provincial Highway No. 2). Alight at 'Teng Tai Kou' (lighthouse) 燈台口 stop, approximate 26 km mark on the coastal road (between Paishawan and Laomei). Walk for around 5 minutes until you reach the harbor.

Previous: Yeliu | Next: Danshui old street
